Cressey Named English Notables

Rev Fr. John Cressey

      Cressey Coat-of-Arms Rev Fr John Cressey, was born about 1400 at Boston, Lincolnshire, England.   He graduated at Oxford College and Divinity School.    Whilst a student he distinguished himself as a theologian.   He wrote extensively, was very active in religious work, and flourished about 1450.  His writings were scholarly, and his preaching eloquent.   

     He was a member of  Carmelite House   The Carmelites or White Friars, from the white cloak which covers their brown habit, were founded as a purely contemplative order but became mendicants in 1245.   They received the approbation of Honorius III (Const. 'Ut vivendi', on 30th January 1226) and later of Innocent IV (Const. 'Quć honorem', 1247).    The order is divided into two sections, the Calced and Discalced Carmelites.   He became head of his Carmelite friary monastery at Boston, Lincolnshire, England, which was Established about 1293.   He died there in 1465.
