Selby Abbey, North Yorkshire

   In the 11th century a monk called Benedict had a vision at the shrine of Saint Germain, Auxerre Abbey,(AD378-AD448) which instructed him to build an Abbey in Selby.   In 1070 King William granted a charter to Benedict giving the land on which to build the first Abbey.     

     John Verrity born Selby Yorkshire, England c. 1843.  

In 1861  aged 18 he is found to be residing with Jane Verrity age 56 at 36 Lenhams Building Hull

His occupation was stated to be a Sail maker, he married Sarah Suter , born Hull, Yorkshire England c.1841.  The marriage took place at Hull in 1864  Volume: 9d page 319. This union produced at least the following five children between 1868 and 1881.

First Child.   Daughter Elizabeth Verrity born c. 1868 Hull Yorkshire.   Elizabeth Married Frederick W Day at Hull in 1887. Frederick was born at Hull in 1861 and employed as a railway porter.

At the cenus of 1891 this couple were residing at no 8 Gardeners Buildings, Hull Yorkshire,with their first two children. Son Ernest Day b.c.1887 and daughter Ethel b.c. 1890

Second Child.   Son William Verrity (1871-1930's?) born March 1871 in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire (ref Hull 9d 247)  Birth registration MYT/81/121.  William married   

Ebenezer_ Ter Hull, Yorkshire c.1900

It is understood that William married Ada Alice Walker in December 1894 (ref Hull 9d/0477) This union produced the following four children.  

First Child. Daughter Ethel born Hull c. 1896 

Second Child.   Son William Verrity  b.c. 1897 

Third Child.    Son Herbert Verrity, born 1898, Hull, Yorkshire, England.   (See Below ****) 

Fourth Child.   Daughter Elsie  b.c 1899, Hull, Yorkshire, England.   

          In 1901 this family were found to be residing at 4 Thorne Terrace, Strickland Street, Hull, William was employed as a Railway Porter

Third Child.   Son Thomas Verrity born  (Ref Hull 9d 226) September 1873 at Myton District, Hull Yorkshire.   Birth registration MYT/91/328. 

       It is understood that Tom, married his brother William's widow, in about 1939.   Tom was a bachelor and had boarded with his brother and sister-in-law for many years and when William died it wasn't acceptable, in those days, that a single man could live in the same household as an unmarried woman.   Tom and his wife died in the same year c.1956 at Hull Yorkshire, England.

Fourth Child.    Daughter Annie Verrity born c.1879 Hull Yorkshire.  Annie married John William Talton at Hull in 1900.  At the cenus of 1901 this couple wre residing at  15 New Buildings, Gt Thornton Street, Hull. Annies brother Thomas was also resident with them.  John William was declared to be a sailmaker whilst Annies brother Thomas a Railway Porter.

Fifth Child.    Son Charles Henry Verrity born c.1880 in Myton district, Hull Yorkshire.   Birth registration MYT/128/274.

   Kings_Buildings, Hessle Road, Hull, Yorkhire c.1900  

     At the census of 1881 of Holy Trinity, Kingston-upon-Hull, York, England,  this family were residing at 15 New Buildings Walker St, Hull.

     At the Holy Trinity, Kingston-upon-Hull, York, England census of 1891 this family were residing at 15 New Buildings Walker St, Hull. 

 No trace of youngest son Charles Henry at this time.

 **** Herbert Verrity born Hull September 1898 (Ref Hull 9d 321)   Early life was spent in the Hessle Road area of Hull and as a young child he attanded Scarborough Street School, Hessle Road, Hull.

     Herbert married Grace Cressey  Daughter and one of six children of Grace Osbourne and David William Cresseythey married at the Church of St Mary and St Peter's Anglican Church Hull, East Yorkshire, England in 1928.

   Early married life was spent at Hessle, residing at 31 Northolme Road, Hessle, East Yorkshire.    This union produced the following two children between 1930 and 1937.

First Child.    Daughter Jean Verrity born 1930 at Hessle district of Hull, Yorkshire.   Birth registration HES/130/160.   Jean married Edward George Berridge at All Saints Church, Hessle, East Yorkshire, England on the 18th June 1949.  At this time Jean moved from Yorkshire to reside in the south of England. 

Second Child.    Son Roy Verrity born Hull, East Yorkshire 1937.   Sadly Roy was not to survive.

    Herbert fought in the First World War, he donated 8 hours of tapes to the Imperial War Museum.    He also stood as a candidate for the Hull City Council.    

     In August 1939 Grace and Herbert took responsibility for Edward,  a young baby, the son of Arthur Cressey and his wife Hilda May Coates. (Hilda May having sadly died). 

     During the Second World War Herbert was a railway shunter in Hull, Yorkshire, shunting munitions trains.

       In 1949 Grace and Herbert also left Hessle, East Yorkshire  to reside in the South of England.

      Young Edward moved to the south of England with Grace and Herbert and stayed with them until 1957 when he emigrated to New Zealand.  He was 18 years old.

     Herbert worked on Epsom Railway Station until about 1963, when he retired.  He lived to be 96, as did Grace.
