At the census in 1861 John Thomas Riches is shown to be an inmate at the Cawston Road Union House, Aylsham, Norfolk.   His mother having died in 1855 and his father John Riches serving a prison sentence - life must have been difficult.

     He married Susan Claxton born at Lammas,  Aylsham, Norfolk c.1848/49  the daughter of John Claxton age 30,a Carpenter, and his wife  Febia aged 28 who were residing at Aylsham, Norfolk.   This  union produced at least the following Nine children between 1872 -1895.

First Child.   Son William Claxton-Riches born c.1872 at Buxton, Norfolk, England.      William kept the surname of Claxton and is so shown on the Census of 1901.   He emigrated to Australia in 1919 from there he finally settled down in New Zealand. 

Second Child.   Son Robert Riches born 12th March 1877 at Sandy Lane, Buxton Heath, Norfolk, England.    At the census of 1901 Robert is found to be residing next door to his parents with wife Ethel (Finch)  (See Profile)
