Potted History- Beginnings

This branch of the Pickering family is traced from the early eighteenth century, originating in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire England.

 Hull is situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire and is one of the principal sea ports of the UK.   Its situation is on the northern side of the Humber, about twenty miles from the mouth of the river, the town In the 13th Century was previously known as, Wyke-upon-Hull, the name change occurred in 1294.

John Pickering born at Bainton, Yorkshire, on 24th May 1786, the Bainton Parish records show that he was the son of a William Pickering.  He married Mary Hannah Godmond, born Hull, Yorkshire, 22nd May 1790 at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England on the 26th March 1815.   They had at least the following five children.   

It is understood that Mary Hannah died c.1837 and that John married again to an Elizabeth at Sculcoates Hull in 1840.

At the census of 1841 this family were residing at 96 Walker Street, Hull, Yorkshire, with them at this time is their grandson Henry Pickering

First Child.   Son Christopher Pickering born Hull East Yorkshire 1816.  Christopher died 1816.

Second  Child.   Son.   George Pickering who was christened on the 26th April 1817 at, Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull.    

George married Jane Anderson at Salem Chapel, Cogan Street-Independent , Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England on 28th February 1849

At the census of 1851 George is found with wife Jane residing at a Liverpool lodgings carrying out the profession of Mariner.

The census of 1871 found them residing at 3 Model Dwellings Cambridge Street, Hull, East Yorkshire.  George Pickering was not present.  However it is interesting to note at this stage that there is an Elizabeth Pickering present shown as mother. This I believe should have been shown as Step Mother.   She was born c. 1791 in Dunnington, Yorkshire and in the 1851/1861 census is shown as married to a John Pickering born 1786 in Bainton, Yorkshire.    

Son.   Philip Pickering christened at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England on 13th November 1854.   The son of George Pickering and Jane.  His occupation is given as a Steamship Stoker.  He married Mary Ann Marsden at Hull in 1874.

Son.   Walter Pickering was born in the Myton district of Hull in the last qtr of 1864, birth reference MYT/59/34 and christened at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England on 15th January 1865. (Source IGI  #: C107482)  

At the census of 1891, Walter had married Ann and was residing at Waterloo Street, Hull, Yorkshire, with the following children.  Daughter Mary aged 2 and Son Harry aged 3 months.

Third Child.   Daughter.    Betsey Godmond Pickering christened on 12th October 1820, at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England married Philip Anderson (b.c.1817 at Hull) on the 2nd March 1843 at Salem Chapel, Cogan Street-Independent , Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England.  Phillip was declared a Fisherman.

At the census of 1851 this couple were residing at 103 Blackfrier Gate, Hull, Yorkshire - There were no known children.  It is understood that this couple emigrated to South Africa.

Fourth Child.   Son.    John Pickering christened 12th October 1822,at Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England.   He married Elizabeth Anderson on the 29th May 1842, at Salem Chapel Cogan Street-Independent , Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England.  Elizabeth was some years older than John.

At the census of 1851 John Pickering is residing with his extended family at 21 Mark street Hull, Yorkshire.

At the census of 1861 the family had moved to Stockton, Co Durham and they were found residing at 6 Allison Street, Stockton. His occupation given as a painter.

At the census of 1871 they were residing at 3 Wade Street Stockton.

Elizabeth died in 1872 at the age of 64 at Stockton, Durham North Riding

The Census of 1881 shows John Pickering now aged Age: 60 and a widower residing at 5 Cleveland Row, Stockton  County/Island: Durham. He is shown as a lodger living with

Fifth Child.   Daughter.   Mary Jane Pickering christened on the 12th October 1824 at  Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England.    She married Robert Jones(b.c.1819) on the 16th February 1845, at Salem Chapel, Cogan Street-Independent, Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire, England.
