Introduction - Potted History- Beginnings

Robert Pickering born Kilnwick c.  Married Jane Loadman b.c at Kilnwick Parish Church, Kilnwick, Yorkshire on  16th December 1751 (Source IGI Batch #: M006823)

William Pickering was Christened on 19th  May 1759,  at Kilnwick, East Yorkshire, England.  The fourth child of Robert Pickering (1731) and Jane Loadman (1751)

     He married Mary Speck on 5th July 1784 at  Bainton, East Yorkshire, England.  Between the years 1784 -1805 this union produced at least the following seven children.

First Child.  Son   Robert Pickering  Christened 23rd August 1784, at Kilnwick, East Yorkshire.

Second Child.   Son  Richard Pickering  born 1786, Kilnwick, East Yorkshire.

Third Child.   Son  Thomas Pickering  Christened 18th July 1790,  at Kilnwick, East Yorkshire.*****See Below

Fourth Child.   Daughter   Jane Pickering Christened. 24th June 1792, Kilnwick, East Yorkshire.

Fifth Child.   Son William Pickering   Christened 10th  September 1794, Kilnwick, East Yorkshire.  

Sixth  Child.   Daughter Mary Pickering Christened 3rd  October 1802, Kilnwick, East Yorkshire

Seventh Child.    Son   David Pickering Christened  16th  September 1804, Kilnwick, East Yorkshire.

***** Thomas Pickering  Christened 18th July 1790,  at Kilnwick, East Yorkshire.  The third child of William Pickering and Mary Speck.   Thomas Pickering died aged 76 years and was buried in Kilnwick Church cemetery on 21st November 1866. 

   He married Sarah? b.c.1800 (still researching) They had at least four children between 1826 - 1841.  Sarah probably died prior to 1851, for at the census of 1861, Thomas is shown as a widower residing at 22 Village Street Kilnwick  (Source RG12 Piece 3910 Folio 43/19)and HO107/1218/6)

( It is interesting to note here that living next door to Thomas at this time is John Carter and his wife Ann (Daughter of Thomas)

First Child.   Daughter Leah Pickering b.c.1829 at Kilnwick East Yorkshire.  Leah is shown residing with her parents at the census of 1841 - but thereafter there is no trace.

Second Child.   Daughter Ann Pickering Christened at  Kilnwick, East Yorkshire on 16th October 1826.(Source IGI  #: 7907934, Sheet #: 49)

  Ann Pickering married John Carter born in 1831 residing at  Kilnwick, son of William Carter of Kilnwick,  Labourer.  (source Killick Parish Register Page 14 Item 28)   This couple appear to have had nine children between 1849 - 1866

Ann Carter (Pickering) died 22nd January 1895 aged 68 and was buried in the cemetery of Kilnwick church.    John Carter died in 1906 aged 77 and rests in the same plot with his wife Ann. The graves at Kilnwick, Yorkshire were visited in June 2001.

Third Child.    Son William Pickering Christened 10th April 1831, at Kilnwick, Yorkshire, England.  At the census of 1861 William was living at home with his father and younger brother Robert.  He was unmarried at this time.  His occupation was that of Ag Lab.

     William had probably married Mary Elizabeth Varley in 1864, Mary, born Yorkshire, c. 1834,  by 1881 they were residing at, Kilnwick Lodge, Beverley Road, Kilnwick, Yorkshire.   This couple probably had the following six children between 1869 - 1880.

First Child.  Daughter Elizabeth Pickering born c. 1869 at Kilnwick, Yorkshire.  Elizabeth probably married John Dobson at Driffield in March 1898.  (Ref Driffield 9d/443)

Second Child.  Son William T. Pickering born c.1870 at Kilnwick, Yorkshire.  At the census of 1891 William was found to be a farm servant at Bracken Farm, Driffield, Yorkshire. William T probably married Sarah Green at Hull in 1910.

Third Child.  Daughter Jane Pickering born c.1871 at North Dalton, Yorkshire.  

Fourth Child.  Son John Pickering born c.1873 at North Dalton, Yorkshire.   John Probably married Mary Kitching at Driffield in June 1894.  (ref York 9d/48)

Fifth Child.  Son George Pickering born c. 1877 at North Dalton, Yorkshire.  In 1891 George was found to be working at Throstle Nest Farm,  Watton, Yorkshire.   A farm Labourer at age 14.   (Ref RG12/3956)  George probably married Joanna Collier at Scarborough, Yorkshire in September 1895.  (Ref Scarborough 9d/576)Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 3956; Folio 5; Page 3; GSU roll: 6099066

Sixth Child. Son Joseph Pickering born c. 1880 at Kilnwick, Yorkshire.  At the census of 1901 Joseph is shown as a visitor with Thomas Harrison and Sarah Harrison at Sculcoates Hull.  He is declared unmarried General Labourer. Joseph probably married Ethel Bontoft at Hull in 1909.

At the 1881 Census William and is family are still residing at Kilnwick.

At the census of 1891 William, a bricklayer's labourer by trade now, wife Mary, their eldest daughter Elizabeth, a domestic servant (cook) and their youngest son Joseph, where residing at Village Street, Kilnwick, Yorkshire.

Fourth Child.    Son Robert Pickering born Kilnwick c. (1834-1877).  At the census of 1861 Robert was living at home with his father (now aged 71) and elder brother William.   He was unmarried at this time, aged 27 years. 

 Robert Pickering married Harriet Dunn at Beverley in 1863, she was born at Brandsburton, East Yorkshire c. 1845, In 1871 they were residing at Kilnwick in East Yorkshire with their first three children.

First Child    Son Alfred Pickering bc. 1865 Kilnwick East Yorkshire. At the Census of 1891 Alfred, aged 25, is found to be a lodger at Holm on Wold, working for Joseph Dunn (Farm Bailiff) as an agri Lab.  Source RG/ 12 3910

In 1896 Alfred Pickering married at Hull, Yorkshire, Caroline Hannah Witty b.c. 1870 at Middleton on the Wolds - By 1901 they were residing with their children at Little Weighton East Yorkshire.  Alfred was listed as a General Labourer

Second Child.    Daughter Mary H Pickering   b.c.1900 at Rowley East Yorkshire

Fifth Child   Daughter Sarah PICKERING   b.c 1875 Kilnwick  East Yorkshire   

By 1881 Harriet was still residing in Kilnwick but a widow, with the following children - Jane, Robert,Thomas and ,Sarah.   Husband Robert Pickering having died in 1877.
