The hospital is famous in so much as it was the largest hospital every built in England.    Built on a site purchased for £15,000, the foundation stone was laid by Queen Victoria on 19th May 1856. The building was completed at a cost of £350,000 in 1863.

The hospital was a massive 435m long three storey building with stone facings.  It had beds for 1000 patients.   Although visually grand and attractive, it was neither convenient nor practical.
