Introduction - Potted History- Beginnings

     Sarah Smith born London c.1827and baptised on 24th June 1827 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Westminster, London, she was residing at 16 Castle Street, Holborn, London  the daughter of Thomas Smith, a Swedish carpenter/ corkcutter who was originally known as Thomas Gravaline.  

     Sarah's cousins,   George Billany and Neiles Boynton Billany were found to be residing with Sarah's family as they had been placed into the care of her father Thomas. 

     Sarah eventually married her 1st cousin, George Billany  (1829-1870), the son of George Billany and Sarah Smith (Gravaline) on 10th July 1848 at St. Anne, Soho, Westminster, London.   At the time of their marriage both appear to have been residing at Old Compton Street in Soho, London.   The bride's older brother, Neiles Smith (Gravaline) is declared as one of the witnesses.  It appears that shortly after their marriage George and Sarah moved to Hull, Yorkshire c.1849.

George & Sarah probably had at least the following eight children born between 1849 - 1865.  

 

First Child.    Daughter Sarah Martha Billany born 1849, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/18/3981849.  She died in 1864 and was buried on 11th February  in General Cemetery, Hull aged 14.

Second Child.  George Thomas Billany born 1850, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/18/398, he married Jane Smith Cooper born 1850-1925), the daughter of Benjamin Cooper on 10th March 1872 at St. Stephen, Hull George was declared to be a shipwright.   This couple had at least six children.   (Source Hull Ref 9d 353)

At the census of 1851, the family were living at 2 Pleasant Place, Hull, Yorkshire with their first two children. 

    Third Child.   Emma Billany born 1853.   In 1872 Emma married John McEwen Brown, a British subject born in Hamburg, Germany in 1845 .  Declared as a "Dock Side Labourer".  They had at least seven known children.

In 1855, they are found to be residing at Aston, Birmingham where one of George & Sarah Billany's sons was born before returning to Hull again by 1858.

Fourth Child.   Neiles Boynton Billany, a tanner was born in Aston Birmingham 1855. He married Elizabeth Hannah Kidd born 1854, the daughter of Marshall Kidd on 9th April 1874 (Source Ref Hull 9d 448) at St. Stephen, Hull and this couple had ten children.   Elizabeth Hannah died at Hull in 1918.   Neiles Boynton Billany died in 1935, Sculcoates, Hull, England aged 80.   (See Profile)

Fifth Child.   Walter Billany was born in 1858, Hull.    He died in 1866, at Hull aged 7.

Sixth Child.    Netta Billany born 8th May 1861, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/48/31.  She married Henry Utton born 1861 on 11th April 1884 at  St. Luke, Hull (Source Ref Hull 9d 364).   This couple had at least three children. 

Seventh Child.   Clara Billany was born 2nd September 1863, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/54/475.   She married Martin McManus on 11th August 1885 in her parish of St. Luke, Hull (Source Ref Hull 9d 341).   This couple had at least seven children.   At the census of 1891 Clara is shown to be residing at 

Albert Terrace, Hull  

13 Albert Terrace,  Hull, Yorkshire with her husband and her first three children.    Also residing with them at this time is Clara's mother Sarah, now aged 64.

Eighth Child.    Douglas Andrew Billany born 12th December at 1865 in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/62/167.    His occupation declared as a boilermaker. 

     On the 14th April 1888 at St. Luke, Hull (Source Ref Hull 9d 348) he married Rhoda Starkey (1867-1931), her birth registered at East Sculcoates Hull, Yorkshire reference EAS/26/79, the daughter of David & Sarah Ann Starkey.   Douglas and Rhoda were the parents of at least five maybe six children.      At the census of 1891 this family were residing at 14 Crowther Buildings, Hessle Road, Hull, with their first two sons:

     At the census of 1901 this family were residing with a further three children at 4 Newport Grove, Hessle Road, Hull.  Douglas was still employed as a Boiler Maker.

George Billany died 12th December 1870  aged 41.

On 2nd April 1871, Sarah, now a widow and her family, were living at 7 Botanic Terrace, Staniforth Place, Hessle Road, Hull.

Sarah and her family were living at 15 Staniforth Terrace, Hessle Road, Hull on 3rd April 1881 with her daughter Emma Brown's family.

At the census of 1891 Sarah now aged 64 is residing with her daughter Clara and family at 13 Albert Terrace,  Hull, Yorkshire

    Sarah Billany died on the 13th March 1892.  She was buried in a Billany Family Plot at Western Cemetery, Hull on 17th March 1892, burial No 1986.   The grave contained within Western Cemetery, Hull  was visited on 10 Aug 2001.   No headstones remain.

 Note:  As far as can be determined, this branch of the Billany Family ceased in a continuing direct line to Cave-kids Clan2000 ancestry on the death of Fred Billany in 1977.   No living person is listed above.
