He was a young man at
the beginning of the first world war in 1914. He
entered the army as a soldier and served in France during the first
world war.

The family story is told that he became a POW, captured whilst lying seriously injured on the battle
front with a serious head
injury. He was hospitalized for many months. The German Medics operated on him to save his life and placed a
metal plate in his head to support a scull fracture.
He survived, however,
due to a further head injury whilst at work in 1929, he
collapsed and died. He was 33 years old.
