Potted History- Beginnings

The Critten family is traced from the late 17th, early eighteenth century, originating in Norfolk, England.

     John Critten married Mary Butcher born Lowestoft, in 1780, on the 14th September 1800 at Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.   They probably had at least the following three children between 1801 and 1807.

First Child.   Son John Critten (1801) Baptised at Lowestoft, Suffolk, England on 9th March 1801.   He married Priscilla (Richmond) (1802-1882) on 19th May 1822 at St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

     In 1841 this couple were residing at South District 14 in Great Yarmouth.  They were both employed at Yarmouth Gaol House.

 This couple had at least one child between 1822 and 1851. In 1851 this family were residing at Theatre Square, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.  

John was listed as a 'Journeyman Painter', son William was declared as a 'Clerk to Notary Public' - Gt Yarmouth.

At the census of 1861 John and Priscilla were residing at 14 Row 20 Gt Yarmouth

 Son William Critten born Yarmouth, Norfolk, England 1831.  William married Bertha Jones, b.c.1830 and this union produced the following children between 1852 - 1873.   Marie B Critten b.c.1852, William G Critten b.c. 1854, Bertha W Critten b.c. 1853,Ames B Critten b.c. 1857  and John Geo Critten b.c.1860, Frederick L Critten b.c. 1861, Ellen A Critten b.c.1863, Harry C Critten b.c. 1866, Jane G Critten b.c. 1870, Charles Critten b.c.1873.  They were residing in Faringdon, Berkshire, in 1861. Second Child.   Son James Critten 1804/5-1879 christened at Parish Church, Lowestoft, Suffolk, England on 21st April 1805.  Batch Reference IGI P009831. James  probably married Hannah Mingly Chapman on the 3rd April 1828 at  Suffolk County, England.

     This couple had at least the following children between 1828 and 1836.     At the 1881 census the family were found to be residing at 5 Westfield Place Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.  (Source: RG11\1915\ 60)  

     Son James Critten Christened Southwold Suffolk, England on 7th September 1828 Recorded in: Bishop's Transcript (BTs) for Suffolk County(Source: FHL Number 918513 Dates: 1828-1828).  

     James married Elizabeth ?born at Beccles, Suffolk, England.   This couple produced at least the following three children between 1862 - 1872.   At the time of the 1881 census James was listed as a boat builder, Son Arthur as a boat builder apprentice and youngest son Ernest, a carpenters boy.

Daughter Clara Victoria Critten born Yarmouth c.1872.   Clara married George Rush born Suffolk 1870, in the second quarter of 1898 at Holborn, London.

James Critten was buried on 31st  May 1879 at St Edmund, Southwold Suffolk, England

Third Child.   Daughter Mary Ann Critten (1807-1891)  Mary Ann (Critten)  born (1807-1891) at Halesworth, Suffolk, England,  married on the 4th February 1827,  James Fuller (1804-1882) born Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England,  at St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth.    The entry of marriage in the marriage Register of Great Yarmouth, is shown on page 143, item No 429.   

   The ceremony was witnessed by brother William Critten (1803).   Also by sister-in-law Priscilla Critten (Richmond) (1802-1882), who had married John Critten c. 1801 on the 19th May 1822 at St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.   

James and Mary Ann Fuller (Critten) had at least five children between 1828 and 1841.

In 1841 the family were residing at Row 141(Previously known as: 'Child the Blacksmith’s Row' or 'Nelson Tavern Row', St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.  James Fuller was listed as a Rope maker.

In 1851 the main Fuller family were residing at 6 Isabella Square, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.   James Fuller's occupation was stated now to be that of a policeman.   At this time a Grand daughter named Mary Ann  Fuller born in 1847 was registered as residing with grandparents.   The census transcriber made a grave error here naming all the members of the residence in 1851 with a surname of - Teuller

In 1881 James Fuller at the age of 77 was still residing with his wife Mary (aged 74), after 54 years of marriage at 6 Isabella Square, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.  Their daughter Susanna was residing with them at this time.  

James Fuller died in 1882.

In 1881 it would appear that Priscilla Critten (Richmond)  (1802-1882) was an Inmate at the institution for the poor, Great Yarmouth.

In 1891 Mary Ann Fuller (Critten) at the age 85 was living with her daughter Maria Thompson (Fuller) at 74 Lower Westwick Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England.  She died in late 1891.
