 Arthur Edward Cressey BEM 1912-1977

     

   One of six children of Grace Osborne and William Cressey, born in the Hessle district of Hull under reference HES/82/335 30th June 1912.  Early life was spent in the Hessle Road Area of Hull, residing down Scarborough street and attending the local School.

     5 Ebenezer Terrace, Walker Street, Hull  

     Following his father into the fishing industry at Hull, he  became a spare hand (Deep sea Fisherman).   He was married on the  6th April 1935 to Hilda May Coates, who was born on the 11th January 1913, at 5 Ebenezer Terrace, Walker Street, Hull, East Yorkshire.  She was the daughter of James Coates (1879) and Mary Ann Coates (1879-1964).

     Hilda May was residing at 10 Fern Grove, Scarborough Street, Hull at the time of her marriage.  

     Witnesses to the ceremony where Arthur's father David William Cressey of 57 North Road, Gypsyville, Hull, and Hilda's father James Coates, who was a Docker.
 
     In 1939 this union produced one son;

First Child.   Edward was born on the  9th March 1939.

     Hilda May Cressey (Coates), having sadly died aged 26 on 19th  August 1939 was buried in a family plot at Western Cemetery   The grave was visited in the year 2000.  A headstone remains.   It was decided that Edward would be brought up by his paternal aunt, Grace Verrity (Cressey) sister of Arthur. 

     After the death of his wife, Arthur moved to Milford, a deep sea fisherman sailing out of Milford Haven. Milford was the fourth ranking deep sea fishing port behind Hull, Grimsby and Fleetwood.

     In 1922 there were over a hundred steam trawlers using the port many of which were registered in Hull and  Grimsby, from 1920 to 1940 between 35,000 and 50,000 tons of fish were landed at this port each year.

     Whilst serving in the second world war Arthur was awarded the BEM (British Empire Medal) an award which is shown in the London Supplement dated 1st July 1941

     Arthur married for a second time to Ada Kathleen Frances Mcdonald This union produced the following children between 1941-1947.

First Child.   Daughter Ada Cressey born Milford, Pembrokeshire

Second Child.   Son Brian Cressey born Milford Pembrokeshire

Third Child.   David Cressey born Milford Pembrokeshire

Fourth Child.   Norman William Cressey born 5th August 1946 at Milford Pembrokeshire.

     Early Life was spent at Hamilton Terrace Milford Haven.
