William Carter (1855-1899)

WILLIAM (m) "will helmet" from the Germanic elements wil "will, desire" and helm "helmet". The name was introduced to Britain by the Normans.

   William Carter, born Kilnwick 1855.  (1855-1899)  The third child of John Carter (1831-1906) and  Ann Pickering 1828-1895.

William left home relatively young and moved to Hull, residing at 6 Walters Terrace, West Parade, Hull, Yorkshire.   

In the 1881 census he was shown as being employed with the then North Eastern Railways as a porter.

At the age of 27 he was still unmarried.  

However in the district of Caistor Lincolnshire in the third qtr of 1885 William married Susannah Rands born in Legsby, Lincoln, England 1856

Susannah was the daughter of Thos Rands and Ann Rands, one of at least eleven children.  At the 1861 UK census Susannah aged 5 is shown with her parents and siblings residing at  Legsby, Lincolnshire.

At the 1871 UK Census Susannah was found to be aged 15 working as a servant for John S Roberds a farmer at Legsby, Lincolnshire.

At the 1881 UK census Susannah was found aged 25 (Unmarried) to be working as a Domestic Servant for Sidney W. CLARKE at South Field, Hessle In Sculcoates, Yorkshire, England

William Carter died at Hull in 1899

Susannah Carter died at Hull in 1921

***Thomas E. married Florence Huzzard born 13th May 1888.  (1888-1976) one of ten children of William and Elizabeth Huzzard- the marriage registered at Beverley, Yorkshire in the first qtr of 1918.

At the UK Census of 1891 Florence is shown residing with her parents and 8 siblings at Etton, Beverley,Yorkshire.

At the UK Census of 1901 Florence is still residing at Etton, Beverley, with her 68 year old father and 51 year old mother - between 1891 and 1901 her siblings had grown from eight to ten

Thomas and Florence produced at least the following children.

First Child   Son   Alan Carter born Hull 23rd September 1918.  (1918-2000)   Alan married Jean Hodgson born Hull  14 Sep 1918  (1918- 2001)  Jean Carter died at Hull, Yorkshire in Jun 2001 aged 82
