John Richard Carter(1912-1997)

JOHN (m) "the Lord is gracious" from the Hebrew name Johanan. This name owes its consistent popularity to two New Testament characters, RICHARD (m) "stern ruler" (Germanic).

 John Richard Carter was born on the 15th November 1912 Birth registered in the Hessle district of Hull under reference HES/83/411,to Richard and Martha (Billany)Carter at Chiltern Street, Hull.     He had one brother Fred Billany some 5 years older.    The first 24 years of his life was spent in a pure protected environment, his mother doing everything for him.   On leaving school he followed his Father into the protected environmental workspace of the Hull City Council, for whom he worked all of his life.       

     He married Doris Amy Fuller on 18th July 1936 at the Register Office in Hull.

They had two children, Judith Ann, Born 14th August 1942 and Geraldine born 18th April 1947,  they lived in Richmond Road, Hessle.

 

     In the late 50s Richard and Doris opened a Guest House for Commercial Travelers at Ferriby Road, Hessle, Richard continued to work for the local council.

 

     Richard was an over generous man who liked a comfortable life without any confrontations whatsoever.   Like his mother before her, Doris did everything for JR.   From cleaning his shoes to being a navy for him, at everything.  

 

     In 1964 after selling the guest house   Richard and Doris had a short period of living in Hull, before returning to Hessle to live at South Lane, Hessle.   After Doris died on 23rd May 1978, Richard spent 5 years living with daughter Judith at South Cave, before returning to South Lane; where he stayed for the remainder of his life, which tragically ended on 6th June 1997, he was cremated in Hull.
