Originally in 1881 Richard's father John's occupation was declared to be an Agricultural Worker.   At the census of 1891 he is declared to be a General Labourer.  However, from an entry in the marriage certificate of son Richard to Martha, he is declared as a plater.   This links into the period of time when the railways were booming and Paragon Railway Station in Hull was being built.

In 1901 they are found at Glasgow Street  Hull, Yorkshire.   John is now declared to be working as a platelayer on the railways.

Richard's entire working life was spent with Hull City Council and they lived in Chiltern Street for almost 70 years.  Richards mother on one side, Maud and then sister Anne at the other.

The houses in Chiltern Street, Hull, were demolished during the early 1970's to make way for the extended ground facilities of Hull Rugby Football Club. The name Chiltern Street, Hull, is still featured on the city plan although it extends only 20 metres or so.   There are now no residential properties, a chapter in the historical record of the Carter/Billany family ceases to exist.
