Originally in 1881 John's occupation was
declared to be an Agricultural
Worker. At the census of
1891 he is declared to be a General
Labourer. However, from an
entry in the marriage certificate of son Richard to Martha, he is
declared as a plater. This links into the period of
time when the railways were booming and Paragon Railway Station in Hull
was being built.
In
1901 they are found at Glasgow
Street
Hull, Yorkshire. John
is now declared to be working as a
platelayer on the railways.

It is interesting to note that Marr
Elizabeth's brother Robert
Bean b.c. 1874 is now
residing with them, having left the
family home of Monument
Cottage, Sledmere. Aged
24, 'Living on own means'? 10
years earlier he had been a
servant at The Grange, Sledmere,
Yorkshire.
It is probable that he worked for GNER (Railways)
for it is known that his brother
William(1855) was working for the
railways at this time.
The family moved to 38 Chiltern
Street, Hull, Yorkshire sometime during
1905. John
tragically died 3rd January 1910 aged 48
at 38 Chiltern Street,
and is buried alongside
his wife Marr Elizabeth in plot
30365,
compartment 493. The grave was
visited in June 2001. No headstone
remains.
