On 22nd
May 1852, John Carter married Ann
Pickering 1828-1895 daughter of Thomas Pickering
(1810-1896) at Kilnwick.
Witnesses
to this marriage were: Robert Pickering and Sarah Holden. John
Carter made his mark, Ann signed the register.
It is probable that Ann Pickering was the mother of Sarah A
Pickering-Carter born at Driffield, Yorkshire c.1849, for at the 1861
census, Sarah is shown as a stepdaughter.
This
couple appear to have had the following eight children
between 1849 - 1866.
First
Child.
Step Daughter
Sarah Ann Pickering-Carter 1849-1923 born at
Driffield, Yorkshire. (Source
Driffield York Vol 23 page 43)
It appears that
Sarah gave birth to a child out of wedlock in the year 1866. The
male child took the maiden name of Sarah's mother (Pickering) and was named
Edward Pickering.
In the 1881
census Sarah was shown as still living at her
parents home in
Kilnwick Village, Kilnwick,
York, England and was still unmarried. Her
son Edward was not living with her at this time and was found to be lodging at 2
Primrose Place, South Street, Hull, Yorkshire.
In
the 1891 census however, both Sarah and her son Edward (Now aged 26) are shown
to be living at the family home, ' Village Street, Kilnwick'.
