      John Carter (1831-1906) born at Rillington, a small village 5 miles north east of Malton in North Yorkshire, the parish also includes the village of Scampston.   Son of William and Ann Carter, baptised at Rillington-cum-Scampston, Yorkshire on 8th March 1831.   In 1851 John is found to be residing at Watton.  His employment given as an 'Agricultural Worker'.

     On 22nd May 1852 he married Ann Pickering 1828-1895 daughter of Thomas Pickering (1810-1896) at Kilnwick.   Witnesses to this marriage were: Robert Pickering and Sarah Holden.   John Carter made his mark, Ann signed the register.   

     It is probable that Ann Pickering was the mother of Sarah A Pickering-Carter born at Driffield, Yorkshire c.1849, for at the 1861 census, Sarah is shown as a stepdaughter.

Kilnwick Church

          Both John and wife Ann resided at 24 Village Street, Kilnwick throughout their lifetime.

Census details at 1861/71/81/91 show them as residing at 24 Village Street, Kilnwick.

Ann Carter (Pickering) died 22nd January 1895 aged 68 and is buried in the cemetery of Kilnwick church.    John Carter died 9th April 1906 aged 75 and rests in the same plot with his wife Ann. The grave at Kilnwick, Yorkshire was visited in June 2001.  

   This couple appear to have had the following eight children between 1849 - 1866.

First Child.   Step Daughter Sarah Ann Pickering-Carter 1849-1923 born at Driffield, Yorkshire.   (Source Driffield York Vol 23 page 43)

   It appears that Sarah gave birth to a child out of wedlock in the year 1866.   The male child took the maiden name of Sarah's mother (Pickering) and was named Edward Pickering.  

    In the 1881 census Sarah was shown as still living at her parents home in Kilnwick Village, Kilnwick, York, England and was still unmarried.  Her son Edward was not living with her at this time and was found to be lodging at 2 Primrose Place, South Street,  Hull, Yorkshire.

   In the 1891 census however, both Sarah and her son Edward (Now aged 26) are shown to be living at the family home, ' Village Street, Kilnwick'.  

    Sarah died on January 6th 1923 aged 73 and is buried in a marked Grave next  to her parents at Kilnwick Church, Yorkshire.   The grave at Kilnwick, Yorkshire was visited in 2001.  A co-incidence is that Sarah died 3 days before her brother Charles in the same year 1923.  Brother and sister are buried together.

Second Child.   Daughter Ellen Carter born Kilnwick 1853 married Thomas Parker Wilson son of William Parker Wilson (Farmer)  on the 22nd October  1879.   In 1881 this couple were residing at Kilnwick Village, Kilnwick, York, England.   Thomas was declared to be an agricultural labourer.  On Sunday 3rd April 1881, Ellen is also shown on the census visiting her sister Anne at the village of Warter, some seven miles to the east of Kilnwick.

This couple were the parents of at least three children.  

First Child.   Son Harry Wilson born Beswick, York, England 1882.

Second Child.  Son Charley Wilson born Beswick, York, England 1886

Third Child.   Son Fred Wilson born Beswick, York, England 1889

In 1891 this family were residing at Beverley Road, Beswick, Yorkshire.

 West Parade Spring Bank Hull

Third Child.   Son William Carter, born Kilnwick 1855.   William left home relatively young and moved to Hull, residing at 6 Walters Terrace, West Parade, Hull, Yorkshire.   In the 1881 census he was shown as being employed with the then North Eastern Railways as a porter.   

At the age of 27 he was still unmarried.

However by 1891 he had married Susannah born in Lincolnshire 1855.  This couple had at least one child; 

First Child.   Son Tom E Carter born Hessle, Yorkshire in 1887.   

The 1891 census shows the family to be residing at 

Hessle Railway Cottages c.2002  

Railway Cottage, Hessle, East Yorkshire.

William's occupation being that of a 'Railway Worker'.

Fourth Child  Son Robert Pickering Carter 1856-1927 born at Kilnwick Yorkshire.   Robert was shown as still living at home in early 1881 unmarried.  He was employed as an agricultural labourer.  However on the 4th June 1881 he married Mary Jane Keeping 1855-1936 daughter of John Keeping (Farmer).  

   This couple had at least the following three children between 1885-1889.

At the census of 1891 this family are shown to be residing at 'Village Street, Kilnwick, Yorkshire.

First Child.   Daughter.   Ethel Carter born Kilnwick in 1885.   Ethel married Harry Etherington of Driffield, occupation a Railwayman, son of George Etherington on 28th June 1913. 

Second Child.  Son.   Alexander Carter born Kilnwick in 1887.   On the 'Roll of Honour' at Kilnwick Alexander is shown as Gunner, Hull Heavy Battery RGA.  Presumed KIA during the First World War - 1914-1918.

Third Child.   Son.   Harold Carter born Kilnwick in 1889.   On the 'Roll of Honour' at Kilnwick Harold is shown as Gunner, East Riding Royal G Artillery.  Presumed KIA during the First World War - 1914-1918.

     Robert Pickering Carter died 8th December 1927 aged 71.   He is buried at Kilnwick Church Cemetery.   Mary Jane died 28th October 1936 aged 81 years.   She lays with her husband in a marked plot at Kilnwick Church, Kilnwick, Yorkshire England.   The grave at Kilnwick, Yorkshire, was visited in the year 2001.

Water Village in the year 2002, East Yorkshire

Fifth Child.   Daughter Anne Carter  born Kilnwick 1859 baptised Kilnwick  25th March 1860.   On the 3rd April of 1881 Annie is residing at the Main Street Public House, Warter, nr Driffield, East Yorkshire.   She was unmarried at this time and working as a Domestic Servant/Housekeeper.

Anne Carter married William Henry  Edmond born at Hayton, Yorkshire c.1860 at Pocklington, Yorkshire June 1882.  (ref Pocklington 9d 111)   This union produced at least the following three children between 1886-1890.

First Child.   Son Leonard Edmond born Klinwick Yorkshire c.1886

Second Child.  Daughter Millicent Edmond born Kilnwick Yorkshire c. 1887.

Third Child.  Son John C. Edmond born Kilnwick Yorkshire c. 1887.

William Henry Edmond was declared to be a Shepherd and at the census of 1891 this family were resident at Village Street Kilnwick.

Sixth Child.   Son Charles Carter 1860 - 1923, born at Kilnwick, Yorkshire, England.  In 1881 Charles was residing at Filey, North Yorkshire (SourceHO107/2368 folio 49)  He was an agricultural worker who remained unmarried as far as can be determined.   In 1891 Charles (aged 31) had returned to the family home, 'Village Street, Kilnwick'. 

     He died 9th January 1923 and is buried in the same plot as his sister Sarah at Kilnwick Church.   The grave at Kilnwick, Yorkshire was visited in 2001.   A co-incidence is that Charles died 3 days before his sister Sarah in the same year 1923.

Seventh Child.  Son John Carter 1862-1910) baptised at Kilnwick on 26th February 1862.   John was still living at home with his parents in 1881.  (Source RG11 Piece 4744)  He was employed as an agricultural worker.   However he later followed his brother William to Hull, to work on the railways.   He became a "plate layer".   **see below

Eighth Child.   Son Thomas 1863-1904 born at Kilnwick .   At the 1881 census Thomas was shown as living at Common Farm, Sheepman Lane, Hutton Cranswick, nr Driffield, East Yorkshire.  His employment was that of an Agricultural Labourer.   Details of his marriage are not yet known, however it is known that he had at least two children, Daughter Elsie Carter and son Sydney.  He died in 1904 at Hull, Yorkshire.

Ninth Child.   Son James born Kilnwick 1866.   Was still living at home in 1891 with his parents (aged 26).  His employment was stated as being a joiner.   As far as can be determined James remained unmarried.

**Son John Carter 1862-1910 married **Marr Elizabeth (Bean) Carter/Condon 1868-1962 in 1889.   This union had at least two children, however, Elizabeth already had one child, a son George Bean who had been born in 1886.

First Child.   Son Richard Carter 1889-1978 born at Garton-on-the-Wolds. He married Florence Martha Billany 1886-1971  at Hull, Florence Martha already had one child at the time of her marriage.(1)  One son was born to this union.(2)

Second Child. Daughter Anne Carter 1896-1965?   Birth registered in the Hessle district of Hull under reference HES/34/485 in 1896.   Annie married Harry Roantree.   This couple had at least four known children.   Two boys and two girls.

(1)First Child.    Fred Billany 1907-1977  Birth registered in the Hessle district of Hull under reference HES/67/116 in 1907 Fred remained unmarried and left no issue.

(2)Second Child.   John Richard Carter 1912-1997 Birth registered in the Hessle district of Hull under reference HES/83/411 in 1912.   He married Doris Amy Fuller 1911-1978 at the Hull Registry Office in 1936,  they had two children, both girls.

First Child.   Judith Carter 1942 married Trevor Cressey 1937 they have two children Lance 1961 and Adrian 1964. Lance married Debbie Lunn 1962, they have two boys, Jamie 1989, Luke 1995.   Adrian married Lena Kelly 1995 and they have two daughters,  Megan 1999. and Madison 2003.

Second Child.   Geraldine Carter 1947 married Frank Bosman 1942  in 1965.   They however divorced in 1982.  There were two children from this union, Peter 1971 and James 1974    Peter married Ruth, they have one daughter Lily Violet.   James remains unmarried.

For historical purposes the Village of Kilnwick in Yorkshire is pronounced Kill'ik
