THE ANCIENT WALLS OF SALONIKA
Richard Carter
was a serving soldier in the Salonika Campaign: an active member of the 2nd Battalion of
the East Yorkshire Regiment. During the period 1915 - 1917
along with his comrades he was part of the
forgotten
war - to
survive was pure fortune, it was not due to the
strategies
of the Ministry of Defence,
Parliament
or the "Red Tag Brigade. If the shells and the
bullets did not get you - then Malaria most certainly would, and
did.
After
the death of Richard in 1978 we came across a soldiers Bible issued in
1914 that once belonged to Pte Jabez Ambler who
had been born in Durham England in 1895 to Henry and
Elizabeth.
"The
inscription in the Bible reads:
19298
Pte J Ambler A Coy Transport Sec
2nd
East Yorks Salonika Forces"

How
the bible came into the possession of Richard is unknown for Jabez Ambler
survived the war to get married in 1921 to Lena Box at Houghton-Le-Spring,
Durham, England.
A
further development was uncovered when clearing out a garage - we came across
and old trunk tool box or so we thought. It turned out to be a soldiers
foot locker from the first world war 1914-1918. On opening the locker we
were amazed to see a painting depicting the arrival of the British soldiers at
Salonika. Very impressive.
