Potted History- Beginnings

The Butcher family is traced from the late 17th, early eighteenth century, originating in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.

Robert Press married Susan.  Between 1681 and 1688 this couple had at least the following three children.

Son Mathew Press Christened Lowestoft Suffolk in April 1681

Son Robert Press Christened Lowestoft 2nd March 1683.   He married Elizabeth George on the 1st January 1706.

Daughter Susanna Press Christened Lowestoft 18th November 1688.**

***Susanna Press married Tomas Todd  at Lowestoft Parish, Lowestoft, 6th May 1712 (Source Batch M009831 IGI).

 This couple had at least the following three children between 1714 - 1724.

Daughter Susanna (Susan) Todd Christened 1st January 1714. **

Daughter Mary Todd Christened  2nd March 1716.

Son Thomas Todd Christened 3rd September 1724.

****Susanna Todd married Richard Butcher originating from Lowstoft, Suffolk at Lowestoft Parish Church on 24th April 1739.  This couple had at least the following six children between 1740-1753.

Daughter Susanna Butcher Christened Lowestoft 1st February 1740.

Son Thomas Butcher Christened Lowestoft  10th May 1741.

Son William Butcher Christened Lowestoft  13th May 1744.

********Son Richard Butcher Christened Lowestoft 17th November 1747. 

Son Mathew Butcher Christened Lowestoft 26th August 1750

Son Samuel Butcher born Lowestoft 25th September 1753

*******Richard Butcher married Susanna Smith.  On the 3rd March 1771.  During the period 1771 and 1791 this couple had the following ten children.

Daughter Susanna Butcher Christened 30th April 1771

Son Richard Butcher Christened 18th October 1772

Son William Butcher Christened 16th May 1775

Daughter Susannah Christened 28th February 1778.  Susannah married John Clarke 9th September 1800

Daughter Mary Butcher Christened 24th May 1780 **************

Son Thomas Butcher Christened 9th March 1782

Son John Butcher Christened 12th July 1784

Son Mathew Butcher Christened 2nd February 1787

Daughter Ann Butcher Christened 19th May 1789

Daughter Sarah Butcher Christened 28th December  1791

 *******Mary Butcher born Lowestoft, in 1780 married John Critten  on the 14th September 1800 at Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.   They probably had at least the following three children between 1801 and 1807.

        1.   Son John Critten (1801) Baptised at Lowestoft, Suffolk, England on 9th March 1801.  

    2.   Son James Critten 1804/5-1879 christened at Parish Church, Lowestoft, Suffolk, England on 21st April 1805

3.   Daughter Mary Ann Critten 1807-1891  Mary Ann (Critten)  born at Halesworth, Suffolk, England,  married on the 4th February 1827,  James Fuller (1804-1882) born Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England,  at St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth.    The entry of marriage in the marriage Register of Great Yarmouth, is shown on page 143, item No 429.   

In 1891 Mary Ann Fuller (Critten) at the age 80 was living with her daughter Maria Thompson (Fuller) at 74 Lower Westwick Street, Norwich, Norfolk, England.  She died in late 1891.
