1901 UK Census extract
RG13/4505)
Shortly
after the census of 1901, the family
returned to reside at, 38 Chiltern Street,
Hull, Yorkshire.
Aged twenty-one, Martha gave birth to a son (Fred Billany
(1907-1977)). It has proved
quite difficult to unravel this potion
of the early life of Martha.
Research has thrown up numerous
conspiracy theories. The
most appropriate theory that fits the
scenario was researched from data on
Fred Billany's birth certificate.
The birth certificate of Fred Billany states that he was born at 40,
Chiltern Street, Hull Yorkshire, on 21st October 1907.
The birth declared by the mother Florence Martha Billany, formerly
Bell. There is no evidence that Martha had previously been
married (declared
a spinster on marriage certificate below dated 1912) and until 1991 had been known as Bellamy/ Billamy, this
family name is shown in the census of both 1881 and 1891.
Martha declares the father to be Arthur Billany a paintworks
labourer and the birth was registered thus in
the Hessle district of Hull under
reference HES/67/116 on 14th November
1907.

Florence Martha married the boy next
door (Richard
Carter)15th June
1912.

They had one son, John Richard born
Hull in
1912. Martha continued to
live at 40 Chiltern Street
with husband
Richard and sons Fred and JR and her
father Neiles. Mother-in-Law
Elizabeth
Carter (Bean) lived next door at No 38 and
sister Maude
resided at No 42. Neiles died
in 1935. Fred at this time
left Hull to seek is fortune elsewhere.
In 1967 with health failing, Martha and
Richard moved to 10 South Lane, Hessle
to be cared for by JR and Doris.
Martha suffered a heart attack and died in 1971,
she was cremated at the Hull
Crematorium.
The
houses in Chiltern Street,
Hull, were
demolished during the early 1970's to
make way for the extended ground
facilities of Hull Rugby Football Club.
The name Chiltern Street, Hull, is still
featured on the city plan although it
extends only 20 metres or
so. There are now no
residential properties, a
chapter in the historical record of the
Billany family ceases to exist.
