George Billany (1829-1870)

George Billany born 1829 at  Hull, East Yorkshire, England, the youngest of  two children of George Billany who was presumed dead in 1831, and his wife, Sarah Smith (originally Gravaline).  

At the UK Census of 1841 Both Neiles and His brother George  were shown working for Thomas Humphrey a Shipbuilder of Wilberforce St,  Kingston-upon-Hull, England, as an Apprentice shipwright and carpenter.  Mother Sarah was not about at this time and father George had died in 1831.

     George, a carpenter married his first cousin, Sarah Smith born 1827 died 1892, the daughter of Thomas & Sarah Smith on 10th July 1848 at St. Anne, Soho, Westminster, London.   

     At the time of their wedding  George & Sarah were resident in Old Compton Street, London.  The bride's older brother, Neiles Smith was a witness to the service.  In 1849 they moved North to reside in Hull.

     George & Sarah had at least the following eight children between 1849 - 1865. 

In 1851 they were residing at 2 Pleasant Place, Hull Yorkshire with their first two children  under the name of Bellamy!

    Sarah Billany died on the 13th March 1892.  She was buried in a Billany Family Plot at Western Cemetery, Hull on 17th March 1892, burial No 1986.   The grave contained within Western Cemetery, Hull  was visited on 10 Aug 2001.   No headstones remain. 

First Child.    Daughter Sarah Martha Billany born 1849, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/18/3981849.  She died in 1864 and was buried on 11th February  in General Cemetery, Hull aged 14.

First Child.   Son George E. Billany born 1874, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/93/241.   

By 1891 George had married Alice and they were residing at 6 Stanley Terrace, Hull with their two children - Daughter Norah born Hull 1888 and son John declared to be 1 month old in April 1891.

Fourth Child.   Daughter Zillah Billany, born 1882, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/138/115.  

Fifth Child.   Daughter Lilian Billany  born 1888, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/164/206.    It is most probable that Lillian married George Ellis in 1915.

Third Child.   Emma Billany born 1853.   In 1872 Emma married John McEwen Brown, a British subject born in Hamburg, Germany in 1845.   Declared as a "Dock Side Labourer".  They had at least seven known children.

Fourth Child.   Neiles Boynton Billany, a tanner was born at Birmingham in 1855. He married Elizabeth Hannah Kidd born 1854, the daughter of Marshall Kidd on 9th April 1874 (Source Ref Hull 9d 448) at St. Stephen, Hull and this couple probably produced ten children.   Elizabeth Hannah died at Hull in 1918.   Neiles Boynton Billany died in 1935, Sculcoates, Hull, England aged 80.   (See Profile)

Seventh Child.   Clara Billany was born 2nd September 1863, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/54/475.   She married Martin McManus on 11th August 1885 in her parish of St. Luke, Hull (Source Ref Hull 9d 341).

Eighth Child.    Douglas Andrew Billany born 12th December at 1865 in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire, birth reference MYT/62/167.    His occupation declared as a boilermaker. 

     On the 14th April 1888 at St. Luke, Hull (Source Ref Hull 9d 348) he married Rhoda Starkey (1867-1931), her birth registered at East Sculcoates Hull, Yorkshire reference EAS/26/79, the daughter of David & Sarah Ann Starkey.   Douglas and Rhoda were the parents of at least five maybe six children. 

     At the census of 1891 this family were residing at 14 Crowther Buildings, Hessle Road, Hull, with their first two sons:

 First Child.   Son.   Douglas Billany b.c. 1889, birth registered under reference MYT/171/251, in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire. Douglas probably married Grace Harrison in 1917.

     At the census of 1901 this family were residing with a further three children at 4 Newport Grove, Hessle Road, Hull.  Douglas was still employed as a Boiler Maker.

Third Child.   Daughter Rose b.c.1892, in the myton district of Hull.  She married Charles William Johnson in 1916, this union had at least five children - sons - Roy, Stan, Charles, Rex and daughter, Lillias.

Fourth Child.  George Billany born myton district of Hull Yorkshire 22nd October 1892.  George married on 12th February 1916 and had three children, Dennis, June and Iris.   George died at Castle Hill Hospital Hull Yorkshire 8th July 1974.

Fifth Child.   Son.   Alfred whose birth was registered under reference MYT/197/398, in 1895 in the district of Myton, Hull, Yorkshire.  Alfred probably married Laura Glen at Hull in 1922.
