Introduction - Potted History- Beginnings

The Beckett family is traced from the late 17th, early eighteenth century, originating from Norfolk, England.

       
William Rising Beckett (1830-1866) at Norwich, Norfolk.  His occupation was a Cordwainer, the first child of William Berry Beckett and Martha Mollett.    

 

William married Jane Snelling Calver (1832-1886) on the 27th October 1851 in Norwich Registry Office, Norfolk, Jane was the daughter of James Calver and Alice Mitchell.   

At the time of this marriage William was residing at: Peacock Yard, in the Parish of St. Stephens.   Witnesses to this marriage were George and Elizabeth Parker.  Elizabeth Parker was Jane Calver's sister.
William and Jane produced the following children.   

This family resided at Row 73, Barker’s North, Cobbs North or Miller the Basket Maker’s Row.   William was a shoemaker.

First Child.    William James Beckett, born 21st May 1853, Pockthorpe, Norwich.  (Birth registered 9th June 1853 at Greens Yard, Pockthorpe, Norwich)   At the census of 1891 James William is staying with Amelia Smith and her family, at 2, Burton Buildings, St Peters Road, Yarmouth.   He is unmarried at this time. (Source RG12//1498/13/66)

Second Child.    Samuel Beckett, b. c.1855, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. On the census of 1871  Samuel is listed as residing with his step-father James Clark and his mother Jane Clark, in Waterloo Rd, Norwich, aged 16 his occupation being a Boot Clicker.

Third Child.    Mary Ann Beckett, born 8th April 1858, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. 

Fourth Child.   James Frederick Beckett, born 8th November 1860, Row 73 (Barker’s North, Cobbs North or Miller the Basket Maker’s Row), Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.  (Bapt. St. Nicholas Church 26th December 1860).   On the census of 1871, James is listed as residing with his step-father James Clark and his mother Jane Clark, in Waterloo Rd, Norwich.

Fifth Child.    Thomas Alfred Beckett, born 31st July 1862, Row 30 (Barnaby the Baker's Row) Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. 

Sixth Child. Jane Rachel Beckett, (1865-1955), born Row 30 (Barnaby the Baker's Row) Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.    Died  Peterborough, Cambs. 

William  (1830-1866) died in 1866.  

     At the Census of 1881 Jane now a widow, occupation a dressmaker, was residing at Upper Westwick Street, Norwich St Lawrence, Norfolk, England, with two of her children, Thomas now a Printer and Rachel a shoe binder.  Also staying with her at this time was Grand child Gertrude Townsend aged 6 born at Yarmouth, Dec 1874, daughter of Mary Ann Beckett also staying at this time was Mary Ann Thirks, her sister aged 54.  Jane had reverted to her maiden name.
