Introduction - Potted History- Beginnings

The Beckett family is traced from the late 17th, early eighteenth century, originating from Norfolk, England.

       
Thomas Alfred Beckett, born 31st July 1862, (Bapt. St. Nicholas Church, 21st August 1862) Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, the fifth child of  William Rising Beckett and Jane Snelling Calver.    Thomas married Amelia Goddard b.c.1867 in Norwich, Norfolk.   Thomas was declared to be a Machine Minder.  Thomas died 11th December 1950 aged 88.  Amelia died 26th August 1952, aged 88.

This union had at least the following Four children between 1890-1899.

At the census of 1891 this family were residing at 21 Mancroft Street, St. Bartholomew, Heigham, Norfolk.

First Child.   Daughter Gertrude Beckett b.c.1890 Gt Yarmouth Norfolk. 

Second Child.    Son William Thomas Beckett (1892-1914).  William was residing at , 1 Caernavon Road, Norwich, with his parents when he  enlisted on the 3rd September 1913 as a engine room Artificer, 4th class, he was killed, 26th November 1914, during WW1 whilst serving aboard HMS Bulwark.

HMS Bulwark a Royal Navy London Class Battleship 15,000 tons HMS Bulwark Launched 1899.  Commissioned in 1912 to join the 5th Battle Squadron. From the outbreak of World War I she carried out Channel patrol duty. On the 26th November 1914 whilst loading ammunition at Sheerness, the Battleship exploded, only 12 crew members survived.

Third Child.   Daughter Ethel Beckett b.c.1895 Norwich, Norfolk. Died 17th May 1915 aged 20.

Fourth Child.   Horace Beckett (1899-1967) Norwich, Norfolk.   

This headstone is in the Earlham Cemetery,

in Norwich, which is a few hundred yards from the Caenarvon Road address recorded for them
