Introduction - Potted History- Beginnings

The Beckett family is traced from the late 17th, early eighteenth century, originating from Norfolk, England.

         Jane Rachel Beckett, (1865-1955), (Bapt. St. Nicholas Church, 5th July 1865) the sixth child of William Rising Beckett and Jane Snelling Calver, born Great Yarmouth, Norfolk.    Died  31st December 1955, Peterborough, Cambs.   

In 1881 Jane was shown residing at Gt Yarmouth with her mother who had remarried a John Clark and again become a widow.  Also present here, are Jane's Brother Thomas aged 18 and a grandaughter, Gertrude Townsend aged 6?

   At the time of her marriage Rachel was residing at Row 30, previously known as Old White Lion Row, Gt Yarmouth.   

On the 30th May 1887 in the Parish of Heigham, Rachel married Robert Downes b.c.1866, the son of Robert Downes and Mary Betts.  Witnesses to this marriage were Thomas A Beckett and Amelia Beckett.  

This couple produced the following children.   

At the UK cenus of 1891 this family were residing in Yarmouth with their two children, also present were Robert Downes aged 55 and Mary Ann Maria Downes the parents of Robert, also his brother Albert Arthur Downes aged 16

First Child.   Daughter Rosina Jenny Downes, b.c. 1890 at Yarmouth..   Rosina married Henry Randall 26th November 1910 at Gt Yarmouth.

Second Child.   Daughter May Ann Flora Downes, b.c. 1891 at Yarmouth.  Mary married William Henry Monument 23rd April 1914 at Gt Yarmouth.

In 1901 this family are residing at Heigham Norfolk, also present is a nephew Albert Downes aged 5.
