Introduction - Potted History- Beginnings

The Beckett family is traced from the late 17th, early eighteenth century, originating from Norfolk, England.

  Charles Mollett Beckett (1831-1890)  Norwich, Norfolk, the second son of  William Berry Beckett and Martha Mollett.   Occupation was a Cabinet maker.  Charles married (1) Rosamund Cullington (1836-1873) at Norwich, in 1854. Bethel Chapel Hull Yorkshire (2) Mary Ann Stone (born 1843) a widow, Courtney, Lincolnshire.   Daughter of William Fanthorpe.   This marriage took place at the Bethel Chapel, North Street, Sculcoates, Hull, Yorkshire, on the 2nd June 1878.   Charles had eight children to his first marriage and three children to his second, between 1855-1885.

First Marriage  

First Child.   Daughter Mary Ann Mollett Beckett, b.c.1855, St. Pauls, Norwich.   Birth registration: 27th May 1855.  Mary Ann Mollett Beckett, residing at Bull Close, St. Pauls, Norwich.

Second Child.   Son William Beckett, b. c.1857, at Heigham, Norwich.   At the cesnus of 1881 William was found to be residing with Christopher and Sarah Bell, a Blacksmith at Southgate, Hornsea, Yorkshire.  William was declared to be a cabinet maker.

Third Child.   Son Charles Beckett b. c.1859, Norwich, Norfolk.  He married Catherine b.c.1857, Norwich, Norfolk.   Charles was a fisherman and at the census of 1881 he was shown to be aboard the fishing smack "Henrietta" out of Grimsby.  With him at this time was his brother Arthur.

Fourth Child.   Son Arthur Mollett Beckett, b. c. 1862, Norwich, Norfolk.   Arthur was a fisherman and at the census of 1881 he was shown to be aboard the fishing smack "Henrietta" out of Grimsby.  With him at this time was his brother Charles.

Fifth Child.   Maria Beckett b.c.1864 Norfolk.   At the census of 1881, Maria was found to be at 90 Cumberland St, Hull Yorkshire working as a domestic servant for Mary Ann Ashwell owner of a Grocer and Drapers Shop at 90 Cumberland St, Hull, Yorkshire.   In 1901 Maria is shown as a housekeeper residing at Sculcoates, Hull, Yorkshire

Sixth Child.    Thomas A Beckett, born 1st May 1867, Heigham, Norwich, residing at Higham Place, Norwich.   In 1881 Thomas was a Scholar at Hull.

Seventh Child.   Walter Beckett, b. c.1869, Norwich, Norfolk.  In 1881 Walter was an Errand Boy. (Birth Registered Norwich 1869 1st Quarter)

Eighth Child. Herbert Beckett, b.c. 1871, Hull, Yorkshire.  In 1881 Herbert was a Scholar at Hull.

In 1871 this family were found to be residing at Heigham, Norwich  Charles was  a Chair Maker.  The census transcriber has shown the Becket family as the Charles Barkett family.

Second Marriage

Cumberland Street Hull   At the time of the second marriage Charles was residing with his family at Cumberland Street, Hull, Yorkshire.   

Mary Ann Stone (35) Widow was living at 21 Bourne St,  Hull, Yorkshire.  Witnesses to this marriage were Samuel Taylor and Jane Beckett.

Kingston terrace, Cumberland St,HullThis family were found to be residing at 9 Kingston Terrace, Cumberland St, Hull, Yorkshire.  Charles was now known as Chas, a Chair Maker.

The union of Charles Mollett Beckett and Mary Ann probably produced the following three children.

First Child.  Alice Beckett b.c.1880 at Hull Yorkshire.   

Second Child.   Anne Elizabeth Beckett b.c.1881,Hull, Yorkshire.

Third Child.   Grace Beckett b.c. 1885 Hull Yorkshire.

Charles Mollett Beckett was buried at Cleethorpes Lincolnshire on 7th February 1890.   First wife Rosamund, death was registered in the 2nd qtr of 1873, at Bailey St, Heigham.   She was buried at Norwich 9th June 1873.     

At the census of 1891 Mary Ann Beckett his second wife was residing at 14 Kirkby Street, Hull, Yorkshire, with her three daughters above.   Also present at this time was her son Herbert Stone from her first marriage.
