Introduction - Potted History- Beginnings

Robert Bean the sixth child of Thomas and Elizabeth, christened at Helperthorpe, York, England. on 30th November 1840. 

Helperthorpe is a small village situated about 14 miles from Malton, Yorkshire.  The village has a long history and straggles an ancient medieval trading route between the East and West coasts of England.  

At the census of 1861 Robert is found to be working as a farm servant for farmer  William Holiday at Front Street Farm Wetwang, Yorkshire.

Robert Bean married Annie Clark b.c 1841 christened 12th February 1843 at, Garton-on-the-Wolds.  Ann was the daughter of  John Clark and Marr Kirby b.c. 1816 at Nafferton, Yorkshire.   They were the parents of Alice c.1841, Ann c.1844, John c.1845, Richard c.1847 and Thos c.1849.  At the census of 1851 they were residing at Garton-on-The-Wolds, Yorkshire.

By 1861 Marr was a widow and they were residing at Church Row, Garton-on-The-Wolds, Yorkshire.  John Clark was no longer present -

By 1871 Mar Clark was still residing at Garton-on-The-Wolds, Yorkshire.

By 1881, Marr Clark (Kirby)  was a widow residing at Church Row, Garton -on-the-Wolds, Yorkshire.

Robert Bean/Ann Clark taken at Monument Cottage Sledmere North Yorkshire c.1900

             The patron of this area was Sir Tatton Sykes, whose stately home is at Sledmere which is approximately 3 miles south of the village.     This couple were the parents of at least ten children (6 sons, 4 daughters born between 1864 - 1881.   It is known that this branch of the Bean Family worked for the Robinson family of Warren Farm Sledmere and that Mrs Bean had a reputation for frugality!    They were strong supporters of the Ancient Order of Shepherds.

First Child.   Son.   John Thomas Bean b.c.1864 at Garton-on-the-Wolds, Yorkshire.   At the UK census of 1881 John Thomas is found to be residing at , Life Hill, Sledmere, Yorkshire.   He was employed as a Farm Servant  Indoor by Thomas Leonard, Farmer.   John Thomas Bean died c.1898 aged 37 (source registered Driffield volume 9/196) (Source PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4796 Folio 78 Page 13)

 

 

 

Second Child.   Son.   William Bean b.c. 1865 at Garton-on-the-Wolds, Yorkshire.   At the UK census of 1881 William is found to be residing at Marramatt (Farm) Sledmere, Yorkshire.   He is being employed by James Snarry, a farmer.  His occupation was that of Farm Servant (Indoor)

'Jumna'William is known to have emigrated to Rockhampton Australia.   William Bean left London England on the 'Jumna' on 17th December 1887 and arrived in Brisbane, Australia on 6th February 1888.  

 

 There  in 1895, he married Elizabeth Ellen Draper, they were the parents of the following six children.

Daughter Florence May 1899. 

Son Albert Edward 1901. 

Daughter Emma Elizabeth 1903. 

Daughter Edith Alice 1906. 

Daughter Evelyn 1908.

       It is said in family circles that a number of years later it was decided that William should come home to see his parents for one last time.   Whilst visiting his parents he caught pneumonia and died on the 13th January 1917, at Mill Cottages, Sledmere, Yorkshire.

Third Child.   Son.   Richard Bean b.c. 1866 at Garton-on-the-Wolds, Yorkshire.   At the UK census of 1881 Richard at the age of 15 is found to be residing at Garton Field,Garton On Wolds, Yorkshire.   He is being employed as a farm servant by Mr John Crust, a farmer.

'Chyebassa'Richard Bean  left London England on the 'Chyebassa' on 30th December 1887 and arrived in Brisbane, Australia on 3 March 1888

        

 

 

He married Sara Elizabeth Swales (born in Wetherby Yorkshire England about 1873),  in Australia c.1895.  'The Duke of Argyll'Sarah and family had sailed from London on 6th December 1887and arrived in Brisbane, Australia  on 'The Duke of Argyll' on 4th February 1888. She was aged 14 at the time and came to Australia, with parents James and Rachel Swales, sister Mary aged 9, brothers Charles H and John T aged 6 and 4 respectively.   This union produced probably four children.

First Child.    Daughter Violet Annie Bean born 24 November 1899.

Second Child.  Son.  Robert Sydney Harold Bean born 1902.  

Third Child.  Son.  Alfred Bean.(not confirmed)

Fourth Child.  Son.  Richard Thomas Alfred Bean born 1904

Monument Cottage at Sledmere birth place of Marr Elizabeth Carter/Condon(Bean)

     At the census of 1871 Robert, wife Elizabeth with their first five children, were found to be residing at Monument Cottage Sledmere, York, England,  a lovely picturesque Village that nestles quietly in the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, famous for its stately home, Sledmere House.    They were employed by the Sykes family to take care of the monument to Sir Tatton Sykes.  They were the first occupants of Monument Cottage and it was Roberts task to maintain the monument.

Sixth Child.   Daughter.   Barbara Ann Bean b.c. 1872 at Sledmere, Yorkshire.  She married Frederick Coates b.c.1863 at Eddlethorpe Westow, Yorkshire. Frederick was the son of John and Hannah Coates who resided at, Pry Cottages, Sledmere, North Yorkshire.

Seventh Child.   Son.   Robert Bean born 18th August 1873 at Sledmere, Yorkshire.     In 1891 Robert was  found to be a servant at The Grange, Sledmere, Yorkshire.

In 1901 it is interesting to note that Robert Bean b.c. 1873 is now residing with his sister Marr Elizabeth Carter (Bean), having left the family home of Monument Cottage, Sledmere.   Aged 24?, 'Living on own means'?

   Robert married Gertrude Lily Bottomley b.c.1877 on 15 September 1907 at Bethel Chapel, Charlotte Street, Sculcoates, Hull, (Source Sculcoates Register Office SRO/70/175).   Robert died at Hull Yorkshire 27th February 1939.  Gertrude died at Huddesfield 20th July 1961.

Eighth Child.   Daughter.   Edith Alice Bean b.c. 1878 at Sledmere, Yorkshire.  Edith married John Ruston at St Stephens Hull in 1898.

Ninth Child.   Son.   Harry Bean b.c. 1880 at Sledmere, Yorkshire.  Harry married Elizabeth Sunman in 1900 at St John Newington Hull.

     At the census of 1881 the family were still residing at Monument Cottage Sledmere, York, England.  However, sons John Thomas, William and Richard, daughter Marr Elizabeth had moved from the family home.

     At the census of 1891 the family were still residing at Monument Cottage Sledmere, York, England.  However John Thomas had returned to the family home.  Mary now married to John Snowden with their daughter Eva b.c 1891 was still living at home.  Youngest son George was not present.

At the census of 1901 Robert Bean is shown still residing at Monument Cottage, Sledmere, as a widow.  Living with him at this time is housekeeper,  Alice Hatfield aged 60 and Granddaughter Mildred, aged 7.
