Robert Bean the
sixth child of Thomas and Elizabeth, christened at Helperthorpe, York, England. on 30th November 1840.
Helperthorpe
is a small village situated about 14
miles from Malton, Yorkshire. The
village has a long history and straggles
an ancient medieval trading route
between the East and West coasts of
England.
At
the census of 1861 Robert is found to be working as a farm servant for
farmer William Holiday at Front Street Farm Wetwang, Yorkshire.

Robert Bean married Annie
Clark b.c 1841 christened 12th February 1843 at, Garton-on-the-Wolds. Ann was the
daughter of John Clark and Marr Kirby b.c. 1816 at Nafferton,
Yorkshire. They were the parents of Alice c.1841, Ann c.1844, John c.1845,
Richard c.1847 and Thos c.1849. At the census of 1851 they were residing
at Garton-on-The-Wolds, Yorkshire.

The patron of this area
was Sir
Tatton Sykes, whose stately home is
at Sledmere
which is approximately 3 miles south of
the village.
This couple were the parents of at least ten children (6 sons, 4 daughters
born between
1864 - 1881. It is known
that this branch of the Bean Family worked for the
Robinson family of Warren Farm Sledmere and that Mrs Bean had a
reputation for frugality!
They were strong supporters of the Ancient
Order of Shepherds.

William
is known to have emigrated to Rockhampton Australia.
William
Bean left London England on the 'Jumna' on 17th December 1887 and
arrived in Brisbane, Australia on 6th February 1888.
There
in 1895, he married Elizabeth Ellen Draper, they were the
parents of the following six children.

It is said in family circles that a number

died on the 13th January 1917, at Mill
Cottages, Sledmere, Yorkshire.

Bean left London England on the 'Chyebassa' on
30th December 1887 and arrived in
Brisbane, Australia on 3 March 1888
He
married Sara Elizabeth Swales (born in
Wetherby Yorkshire England about 1873),
in Australia c.1895.
Sarah
and family had sailed from London on 6th December 1887and arrived in
Brisbane, Australia on 'The Duke
of Argyll' on 4th February 1888. She was
aged 14 at the time and came to
Australia, with parents James and Rachel
Swales,
sister Mary aged 9, brothers Charles H
and John T aged 6 and 4 respectively.
This
union produced probably four children.

the census of 1871 Robert, wife
Elizabeth with
their first five children, were found to
be residing at Monument Cottage
Sledmere, York, England, a
lovely picturesque Village that nestles
quietly in the rolling hills of the
Yorkshire Wolds, famous for its stately home,
Sledmere House. They
were employed by the Sykes family to
take care of the monument to Sir
Tatton Sykes. They were the
first occupants of Monument Cottage and
it was Roberts task to
maintain the monument.
