Introduction
- Potted History- Beginnings
The
Bean family origins are found from the
early 17th century in the North
Yorkshire Villages of Great Edstone/Settrington/
Scagglesthorpe, Yorkshire.
Settrington/Scagglethorpe
are quiet villages at
the foot of the Wolds close to
Norton/Malton
in North Yorkshire.
Historically Settrington is a great
village. During its early history the
village was owned by Lady Margaret
Douglas, maternally a Tudor and half
sister of King James V of Scotland,
Countess of Lennox, and the mother of
Lord Henry Darnley, husband of Mary
Queen of Scots. Documentary
evidence shows that some time later,
Queen Elizabeth I owned the land.
The owner
of the Manor in the mid 16th Century
was Sir Francis Bygod who took part in
the 'Pilgrimage of Grace', a Northern
Revolt against Henry VIII and the dissolution
of the monasteries. The
revolt was led by Robert Aske, a kinsmen
of Bygod's. The rebels were defeated and
the state took retribution against them
by confiscating their wealth and
property. History just repeats
itself!!!
The Bygod
family at Settrington became innefective,
loosing their power, but a family branch
which probably descended from Henry
Bygod survived at Scagglethorpe until
about 1630, moving to Acklam.
Marriage
of Bygod daughters into local families
like the Bielbys and the Melton's, spread
the family genes throughout the area.
The
village became the property of the
Masterman Family and it was a member of
that family who became Lady Sykes, she had
the village rebuilt.
Settrington House is the home of the
Orangery, the setting for many classical
concerts the house being
built next to the ruins of the medieval
manor.
